OBTAINING PAINTS WITH NATURAL PIGMENTS

In this project, 2nd and 3rd ESO students transformed everyday products into art using chemical processes. First, they extracted natural pigments from plants and then isolated casein from milk to use as an eco-friendly binder. The result was the creation of their own handmade paint, combining laboratory science with creativity.

In the case of 3rd ESO, students in their Physics and Chemistry class, learned how to obtain different paints from natural pigments.

Green from spinach, yellow from turmeric, gray from ash, and brown from clay.

In order to produce from the pigment mixture a paint as it was made in the 16th century, it needed to be bound together by extracting casein from milk, as explained in the video below. This procedure was carried out by 2nd year ESO students.

The experiment was a resounding success, enabling students to produce stable paints with vibrant colors. All groups successfully extracted the pigments, and casein proved to be an effective binder, demonstrating that it is possible to apply chemical principles to create sustainable and functional products.
