The Lizard of Viso: Fact or Legend?

The 1st ESO students of the 24/25 course became detectives for a few days to solve a mystery that we have right here: the legend of the Lizard of Viso.

I’m sure many of you have passed by the church and seen that huge animal hanging on the wall. But what exactly is it? Our students set to work investigating:

  • Secret Identity: They looked at photos and information to discover what kind of reptile it is. Is it a giant lizard, a crocodile, or an alligator?
  • The Name: They investigated why everyone calls it “the lizard” and how it arrived in our town so long ago.

We do not only look for data in books, but we ask ourselves: “If that animal were alive today, could it live in Viso del Marqués?”

To solve it, the boys and girls analyzed what our climate was like years ago, if there was enough water and if the animal would find food in the area.

Since such an investigation couldn’t remain solely on paper, the students recorded their own videos. In them, they explain everything they’ve discovered in their own words, answering questions clearly and engagingly.

It’s been a different way of learning: investigating, working as a team, and, above all, appreciating what we have in our own environment.
