A walk among plants: study of the gardens from the Palacio of Viso del Marqués

Our students from the 1st year of Secondary Education carried out a research and identification activity on plant species in the gardens of the Palace of Viso del Marqués. During the outing, the students acted as botanists, observing the characteristics of different trees, shrubs, and ornamental plants found in and around the gardens. To identify each species, they used a dichotomous key, learning to differentiate plants based on aspects such as leaf shape, trunk type, flowers, and fruit.

In addition, each group received a map of the gardens where they had to locate and mark the position of the identified species. This activity helped develop spatial awareness, teamwork, and direct scientific observation of the environment. As a result, the students gained a better understanding of the plant biodiversity present in a nearby historical and heritage site.

Later, in the classroom, each group created a digital slideshow with information about the identified species. These presentations included photographs, common and scientific names, main characteristics, interesting facts, and uses for each plant. Finally, all the presentations were transformed into QR codes, which will be engraved and printed using a laser cutter. This way, anyone can scan the codes with a mobile phone and directly access the students’ work, creating an interactive and informative resource to showcase the rich plant life of the palace gardens.
